A Breast Augmentation Procedure in Five Steps with Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Kashaf MD:
- Step 1: Consultation for Breast Augmentation – The first step in planning a successful breast augmentation, breast lift, breast enhancement, breast enlargement or reconstructive breast surgery, is to meet with a qualified, board-certified surgeon who is an expert in Cosmetic Surgery. The surgeon will discuss your goals, review your medical history and then curate a treatment plan for you that includes choosing your type of implant, shape, profile, placement and much more.
- Step 2: Pre-Operative Planning – There are unique steps to take before your breast augmentation, and may include stopping certain medications like blood thinners and nicotine, and avoiding alcohol for two weeks before surgery. Your surgeon, Dr. Kashaf, may even ask you to fast and not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to your procedure. Always consult with your board-certified surgeon for exact pro-op instructions for best outcomes.
- Step 3: Preparing for Breast Augmentation, Anesthesia & Incision – On the day of your treatment, you will be moved into the procedure room and begin with a course of medications for your comfort and sedation. This may include general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Once you are properly sedated, the surgeon will begin by carefully creating a 3 to 6 centimeter incision near your breast. The exact incision location will vary depending on the type of implant placement you have chosen (Inframammary fold, Periareolar Transaxillary, Transumbilical)
- Step 4: Breast Augmentation Procedure, Implant Placement & Closure – After the incision has been made, the surgeon will carefully insert the implant into the pocket that has been created. This may be behind breast tissue or chest muscle. This step takes careful planning and skill, and only highly qualified Cosmetic Surgeons like Dr. Kashaf can perform this successfully with beautiful results. After the implant has been placed, the surgeon will use a combination of layered sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape to close the wound.
- Step 5: Recovery Room – The surgical team will move you into a private recovery room where you will stay approximately 20-60 minutes until you wake up from your sedation. At this time, your emergency contact must be at the office to retrieve you and drive you home. You will not be allowed to drive home or operate machinery for the rest of the day. As you slowly wake up from sedation, you may feel slight discomfort or pain and will be given some pain reliever medications. Please follow all the after care instructions provided to you by Dr. Kashaf.
- Step 6: Downtime & Recovery at Home – The downtime and recovery process from breast augmentation requires 5 to 7 days of initial downtime. If you have a sedentary job or lifestyle, you will be able to return to normal activities soon thereafter. However, it’s recommended to wait 6 to 8 weeks before starting vigorous exercise or lifting over 10 lbs or sleeping on your stomach. Various aftercare instructions from your surgeon may include using compression garments, sleep positioning, medications, water/pool restrictions, specific cleaning & dressing protocols and more.
Recovery, Results and Risks:
Full recovery from breast augmentation (boob job), breast enlargement, breast enhancement, breast lift, and/or breast reconstruction will take approximately 6 to 8 weeks to fully recover with optimal results fully visible in 3 to 6 months. Over the course of healing, patients may experience swelling, chest soreness and tightness in their breast and upper body. After your body normalizes however, the results from highly qualified and skilled surgeons like Dr. Kashaf are life changing and have amazing cosmetic appearance. Patients will love the new look and feel of their enhanced breasts that are larger (or smaller) and now contour beautifully to their body. Like with any procedure, there are always minor risks but these are very minimal when undergoing surgery with a qualified surgeon. The risks may include wound healing and scarring, implant leakage or rupture, visible rippling under the skin, capsular contracture, infection, hematoma, or other rare conditions. Your surgeon will inform you of all the risks and benefits of the procedure prior to your appointment.
Breast Augmentation San Diego Frequently Asked Questions
How long do breast implants last?
Breast implant technologies are becoming more advanced every year, with the average implant lasting anywhere between 10 to 20 years with the exact timeline depending on the type and placement of the implant. Silicone implants typically last 10 to 20 years but require routine checkups to ensure that no ruptures have occurred, because these can be dangerous. Saline implants generally last 10 to 15 years and have safer ingredients should something rupture, so routine MRI or checkups are not required.
Is breast augmentation or boob jobs painful?
Managing pain and recovery after a breast lift, augmentation, enhancement is our top priority especially when being treated by a premier board certified surgeon. While breast implants do not hurt once fully healed, the surgery and recovery process may cause the average patient mild soreness, swelling tightness, pressure and discomfort. Your surgeon will recommend a plan for pain management which may include over the counter or even prescription pain medicine. The first 48 hours to 72 hours are the most painful, with symptoms subsiding over the course of 5 to 7 weeks. The recovery period depends on your pain tolerance, the placement of the implant and your body’s unique healing process.
What is recovery like after breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery recovery typically takes anywhere between 5 to 7 weeks to fully recover, with optimal cosmetic results at 3 to 6 months. The initial symptoms of swelling, soreness, tightness and pressure will subside significantly as the weeks progress. Your board-certified surgeon will be checking in on your healing every single week to ensure optimal results.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
Many patients ask their surgeon if they can breastfeed normally after a breast augmentation surgery and the answer is yes! Your surgeon will work with your specific case to make sure that you can breastfeed successfully, however the rate of success will depend on the type of implant, placement and incision site that is chosen for your surgery. The most popular choice is submuscular implant placement (under the muscle) and incisions that avoid the areola area (such as in the breast crease) as this carries the lowest risk of affecting milk production and lactation. There is always a risk with any surgery and this is best discussed with our surgeon. In worst cases, the milk ducts can become damaged, the breast tissue and/or repositioning of the nipple and severe milk ducts or nerves.
